Once, a friend asked for our help to design a company logo, flyers and web banner for his start up business. He told us he was surprised with the high cost of having those things done.

You can get any logo designer program or any other cheap design software to create your logo, advertising mailer, etc. But will you commit your self countless of hours to create your logo? Wouldn't you prefer spending those hours growing your business?

What about those sites that offer free design for business card, mailers, etc?
Although they offer a good cheap alternative, the quality of their logo is "a dime a dozen" kind of logo.
They had general premade logo that people can use freely. With that being said, would you risk building your business and brand only to be told later that your logo was also used by your competitor?  You will also not be able to trademark your brand logo since there is no transfer of ownership.
